Monday was a huge day for us, putting together a press conference at the United Nations to kick off (no pun intended) Copa NYC. Copa NYC is a new soccer tournament we’re launching this July modeled after the World Cup – 16 amateur teams each representing a different nationality and cultural community contributing to NYC’s (and America’s) diversity.
The luncheon/cocktail party event went off without a hitch, hosted by the UN Ambassador of Zambia, Isaiah Chambala, a super friendly dude that opened with a heart-riveting speech about unity. Tommy Smyth, a legendary commentator from ESPN, closed with a fist-pumping podium-smashing speech that sent everyone reeling. The Redbull trick team was there showing off their skills that would make the Harlem Globetrotters proud, and we topped off the event with the traditional ball drop to determine the groupings and first round matchups for the first day of the tournament. Title Sponsor Boost Mobile rep and The teams for this year’s tournament are comprised of some of the best players in the city, so the competition is going to be fierce this first year.
See the full lineup on the official website (also produced by Catharsis) at www.copanyc.us.
Peep some more photos of the event on our photographer Carey Kirkella’s site.
Catharsis, in conjunction w/ Mic Wreck Records, was able to work again with the legendary MC Rakim Allah, in facilitating the most important and influential collaborations in Asian hiphop history. Check out the new track, “Monster”, featuring Rakka of Dilated Peoples, Roscoe Umali, T, and Rakim, from the album “Feel gHood Muzik, the 8th Wonder” out now in Korea.
We’re happy to welcome an amazing talented performer into the fam. Meet Kenny Muhammed, the Human Orchestra.
Check these clips for a taste.
Peep the onesheet.
We’ll keep you posted on upcoming shows and events featuring Kenny.
South By has come and gone and now that the dust has settled, a little recap. But first, we have a some thanks to give to Josh Kaplan of L4M (for all you aspiring musicians out there, make sure to check out his blog), our street team out in Austin (thanks Sun-Jue!), and our sponsors (Stahl Cowen, Music Dealers, Vapors, Karmaloop TV, and WeSC), Kate at Momo’s, and MC Dumbfounded. Most importantly, we couldn’t have done it without the talent who killed it all day. Big thanks to The Cool Kids, Fatlip, Kidz In The Hall, Hey Champ, Whatzisface, French Horn Rebellion, DJ Clinton Sparks, and impromptu appearance and performance by Pac Div. See you next year at SXSW!
